The Westover Scientific Video Inspection Probe is a portable, video microscope used to inspect fiber optic terminations. More specifically, the FBP is used to inspect installed connectors that are located inside hardware devices or in the “backside” of patch panels. It eliminates the need to access the backside of patch panels or disassemble hardware devices prior to inspection.

Patch Panels: Many patch panels feature a design wherein one connector is easily inspected (front), but the other is difficult to access (back). Inspecting the connector on the front side of the panel is commonly performed using a simple fiber inspection microscope. However, the backside connectors are not as easily inspected with traditional microscopes, thus requiring time consuming troubleshooting. The FBP system combines with Westover’s line of “Cleaning Sticks” produce a fast and effective means for installing, troubleshooting, or maintaining fiber optic patch panels.

Hardware Devices and Test Equipment: Most hardware devices feature connectors, at the faceplace of a “box”, that lead to the back-plane circuitry. These connectors are very difficult to access since they are built into the device’s enclosure. If a contaminates jumper is inserted, the termination inside the divice can become contaminated and contribure to signal loss. Many test equipment designs feature the same type of “back plane” fiber wherein a critical fiber termination lies just inside a piece of hardware. The FBP “Probe” used in conjuntion with Westover’s line of “Cleaning Sitcks” can be used to ensure that the termination inside is clean.

Mil-Aero Connectors: Most Mil-Aero connectors are based on multiple fiber plugs that embody “Termini” ferrules. Typically, one end of the connector contains multiple “pins” and the other contains multipler “sockets”. In either cas, you cannot inspect the terminations with a traditional microscope because you’re not able to “look” down inside the sockets. Using the FBP “Probe”, you are able to access the fiber endfaces, and inspect these connectors fully assembled.

Cable Assemblies: In addition to inspecting backside connectors through bulkhead adapters, the FBP is available with an adapter tip for inspecting patch cables and cable assemblies.

HD1 Hand-Held Display
Bright, hight contrast 2.5″ TFT active matric LCD Display. The probe’s hight magnification projects a 530-micron field onto the LCD display. The Auto-Shutoff Interval switch can be set to one of three settings: 10 sec., 30 sec., or Infinity. Pressing the On/Off switch will turn the LCD display On for the set interval time. Pushing the switch again, turns Off the display.

Battery Power and Recharge
The display utilizes a NiMH rechargable battery pack. From a full charge, the system can operate continuously for approximately 3 hours. You can ectend the battery life by using one of the two display’s Auto-Shutoff Interval settings. The system’s “Low Battery” indicator signals when the battery runs low. (Approximately 15 minutes before automatic shutdown. After this time, the battery must be recharged.) Use external power (AC power adapter) to charge the battery pack. Typical battery charging time is approximately 2-3 hours.

AC Power

Using the AC power adapter has the following advantages:
– Saves internal battery power for portable operation later.
– Charges internal battery pack.
– Allows extended operation.

The two LED’s on the front of the Hand-Held display, indicates the display’s AC Power and Battery Power status.

The Wilcom Model F6222 Telecom Optical Fiber Identifier is a rugged, easy-to-use installation and maintenance instrument which identifies optical fibers by detecting the optical signals being transmitted through a fiber. By utilizing local detection technology (non-destructive macro-bend detection which does not damage or overstress the fiber), this units eliminates the need to open the fiber at the splice point for identification; eliminating the probability of interrupting service.

This Optical Fiber Identifier detects low frequency tones at 270 Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz. When traffic is present on the fiber under test, an audible tone can be heard as well as the traffic direction which is indicated by LEDs illuminating on the probe.

During installations, maintenance, rerouting, or restorations it is often necessary to isolate a specific fiber without disrupting service. A light source such as Wilcom’s Model FS1316 used in conjunction with the Optical Fiber Identifiers can make the job a lot easier.

This Optical Fiber Identifier includes a carrying pouch containing three easy to use field interchangeable adapter heads to accommodate; 900 µm buffered fiber, ribbon or 250µm coated fiber and 3mm jacketed fiber.
